For a long time Openreach has enjoyed a near monopoly on our network connections – no matter if you use Plusnet, BT, TalkTalk or any other provider, chances are they run have over the Openreach network. the only other option has been Virgin Media.
This is starting to change, with independent networks putting in place nearly 1 million FTTP networks last year – more than double what Openreach managed according to a report by the Independent Networks Cooperative Association.
The INCA report now firmly puts alternative networks collectively as a third competitor in new full fibre infrastructure provision.
From our perspective, having an alternative option can only be a positive thing as it should give Openreach some incentive to become more responsive to market demands – and there is obviously an alternative if they don’t.
