If you use a laptop for work purposes, and you take it out of the office, in order to be GDPR compliant you need to either ensure that there is no personally identifiable data on the device, or that you have sufficient security measures in place to stop unauthorised access. A Windows password would present a minor obstacle to a would-be hacker, but is insufficient in itself – you could easily by-pass Windows altogether in order to access files such as Word, Emails or Excel.

Total encryption of your hard drive ensures that all files are inaccessible until you enter a pin code when booting the computer up – aside from entering your PIN you would not know the difference when using the computer, but should your laptop be lost or stolen it will be useless to any unauthorised person.
